What the climb is like
The trail is short but has steep sections and loose stones. The climb usually takes little time, with stops to enjoy the view as it opens up. Shoes with good grip help a lot, especially on the way down. At the top, the plateau is wide and lets you walk between different lookout points.
The view from the top
From the plateau you can see formations such as Morro do Camelo and the Três Irmãos range, as well as valleys covered with rocky-field vegetation. It is a great place to understand Chapada’s geography: the isolated mesas, the escarpments and the vastness of the Serra do Sincorá.

Sunset at Pai Inácio
In the late afternoon, low light brings out the relief and paints the ranges gold and orange. That is why, on our itineraries, Pai Inácio is the last stop of the cave circuit: after Lapa Doce, Pratinha and Gruta Azul, the climb happens at the end of the day so you can watch the sunset. For couples, it is a special moment; see Chapada Diamantina for couples.
The legend of Pai Inácio
The hill’s name comes from a local legend: Inácio, an enslaved man, is said to have become involved with a farmer’s wife and, when pursued, fled to the top of the hill. Cornered, he jumped from the cliff holding an umbrella and, according to the story, escaped. Guides often tell this and other stories during the climb.
How to include Pai Inácio in your itinerary
The viewpoint is part of the cave circuit on all our classic itineraries, such as 4 Days Classic and 7 Days Classic, leaving from and returning to Lençóis. Learn about the day’s other stops in the caves of Chapada Diamantina.
Tips for your visit
- Bring a light jacket: it is windy at the top and the temperature drops after sunset.
- Wear shoes with good grip for the climb and descent.
- Carry a small flashlight for the descent at dusk.
- Keep away from the edges of the plateau.
