Caves of Chapada Diamantina: Lapa Doce, Pratinha and Gruta Azul
Limestone chambers, blue water and sunset at the end of the day: what the Chapada Diamantina cave circuit is like.
Por Chapada Soul Team · · 2 min de leitura
The caves of Chapada Diamantina reveal a side of the region many people do not expect: an underground world of limestone, with vast chambers, formations carved by water over thousands of years and intensely blue pools. The best-known outing is the cave circuit, which combines Lapa Doce, Pratinha and Gruta Azul and ends with sunset at Morro do Pai Inácio.

Gruta da Lapa Doce
Lapa Doce is a vast limestone cave with stalactites, stalagmites and columns of many shapes. The visit is guided, lit by flashlights, and crosses chambers of impressive size. It is the first stop of the day on our classic itineraries and usually amazes visitors with its scale.
Fazenda Pratinha and Gruta Azul
After a lunch of home-style regional food, we head to Fazenda Pratinha, a complex of crystal-blue water flowing from inside a cave. Gruta Azul is also there: at certain times of day, sunlight enters through the opening and lights the water a deep blue.

Ending the day at Morro do Pai Inácio
The cave circuit ends with the climb up Morro do Pai Inácio to watch the sunset over the ranges. The mix of caves, blue water and a viewpoint makes this one of the most complete days of the trip, leaving Lençóis in the morning and returning in the early evening.
Other water caves: Poço Azul and Poço Encantado
On another day of the itinerary, cave pools take center stage: Poço Encantado, about 60 meters deep with a shaft of light over the water, and Poço Azul, where you can float. Learn more in our Poço Azul and Poço Encantado guide.
What to bring on the cave circuit
- Closed shoes with good grip: cave floors can be uneven and damp.
- Swimwear and a towel for the water at Pratinha.
- A light jacket for late afternoon at Pai Inácio.
- Sunscreen and water. See the full list in what to pack for Chapada Diamantina.
A good option for rainy days and families
Because they involve moderate effort and are more sheltered, the caves are often a good alternative when the forecast calls for caution around rivers. They also work well for families. See Chapada Diamantina in the rainy season and Chapada Diamantina with kids.
